 New Woodlice Project

so just recently I decided that I feel like there is a lack of supply in my area of reputable dealers or sales thereof for woodlice AKA(slaters) hence I have deiced to get back into breeding them, now while this may be a very easy task to achieve, I am attempting to do something a little bit different, instead of just dumping all the woodlice in a box, throwing some food at them and chucking them in a warm dark place ( my hot water cabinet ) I have decided that I would like to do some selective breeding of the different colour variations so that I can have four variations in colour, these being the typical grey, orange, spotted orange and domino which are like the grey ones but a bit more splotchy in colour, I am hoping that they breed at a rate being viable so that I don’t take too long to achieve a good supply. Please follow me if you would like to see the progress. Thanks

this is the base culture newspaper, bread and coir peat base.

The domino ones that i have selected so far, note the white splotches.

These are some of the more orange ones that I found but are not the true orange ones yet.

The Base culture in all its Glory!

If you find this interesting or have any questions, of how to do this successfully please ask and i will help where and when i can. and enjoy my project. peace

  SLUGS IN THE BATHROOM

                                                          (Limax Maximus species)
As of the last phew years that I have been living in my flat I have quite regularly noticed that during the colder months of the year, these being June to early September, there is a steady influx of slimy little slugs that come into the house.

So one may ask "why is there always so many slugs in my house" well the answer is not so complicated.
Basically slugs move quite slowly and have to still procreate, what happens is as the slugs is moving along it leaves a slime trail behind which can sometimes be seen in the sunlight as a shiny stripe of sorts, the other slugs come across this trail and follow it, this may be survival or because of pheromones may lead the other slug which may be of opposite sex to a potential mate, but for the most part eventually the slug that is being followed will come across some food which is great because the one that is following will have no problem finding it as well.

But more still the slugs come into the house plain and simply because the house is warmer (same reason mice venture inside) and also just because another slug has done so in the past.

: there are some preventative measures you can take.

Make sure there are no gaps for them to get in through.

window seals may help.

but they also come up through the drain pipes for the bath and potentially the shower, so seeing these little slimy buggers may be UN-avoidable. for the most part you will be alright if you just return them outside.
